Plogging Campaign in the Tiergarten Following the Berliner Wasserbetriebe 5 x 5K TEAM-Relay Berlin

TEAM-Relay Berlin meets Gieß-den-Kiez: Plogging and Tree Watering in the Tiergarten, Berlin

One week after the Berliner Wasserbetriebe 5 x 5K TEAM-Relay Berlin, around 30 participants gathered on Tuesday evening for a joint plogging activity in the Tiergarten. In sunny weather, the volunteers, equipped with gloves, garbage bags, and litter pickers, moved through the event site and surrounding paths to collect any waste left behind. Among the motivated participants was long-distance runner Rabea Schöneborn from Marathon Team Berlin, who supported the environmental initiative.

Plogging involves collecting litter while running or walking. In addition to picking up waste along the route, participants also watered street trees in and around Berlin’s Tiergarten. The idea of watering trees is inspired by initiatives such as “Gieß den Kiez,” which raise awareness of the effects of increasingly frequent dry periods and contribute to preserving Berlin’s urban tree population.

The combination of physical activity, environmental engagement, and community spirit demonstrated how sustainable action can be integrated into everyday life. Whether through collecting litter or supporting urban greenery, many small contributions can collectively make a noticeable positive impact on the city.

Physical Activity Meets Environmental Engagement

The community run was part of BerlinPay Month, an initiative by visitBerlin that rewards sustainable engagement. People who help with planting, water trees, travel by bicycle, or collect litter can redeem rewards in the form of cultural, leisure, or dining experiences. We were delighted to be part of this important initiative and look forward to participating again next year. Further information about BerlinPay is available online.

Sustainability Throughout the Relay Event Days

Sustainability also plays an important role along the course of the Berliner Wasserbetriebe 5 x 5K TEAM-Relay Berlin. For example, the cups used at the refreshment stations are collected separately. The waste management company REMONDIS then ensures that the cups are recycled.

In addition, participants were encouraged to keep the event site clean and dispose of waste in the designated collection containers. The joint plogging activity reinforced this message.

Joining Forces for Sustainability in Berlin

The campaign provided a successful conclusion to the Berliner Wasserbetriebe 5 x 5K TEAM-Relay Berlin and highlighted how sporting togetherness, social commitment, and environmental awareness can go hand in hand.
