Marcel Hug confirmed his position as the world’s leading wheelchair racer. The 31 year-old took the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON with 1:29:03 and was more than three minutes ahead of Japan's athletes Kota Hokonule (1:32:42) and Ryota Yoshida (1:32:43). Switzerland’s 20 time Berlin record winner Heinz Frei just missed out on the podium and finished fourth in 1:32:46.

Defending champion Manuela Schär was again number one in Berlin. With a time of 1:40:05 the athlete from Switzerland had a big advantage on fellow-Swiss Sandra Gras (1:45:24). Germany’s  Annika Zeyen was third in 1:51:02.

With his Berlin victory Marcel Hug took the lead in the overall standings of the Abbott World Marathon Majors Series 2017-2018. He now has 41 points. In the women's series Manuela Schär increased her lead and now has 50 points. The series began at the Virgin Money London Marathon in April and will end there in 2018.

Jetze Plat and Christiane Reppe were the winners of the handbike event. Dutchman Plat took the men’s race in 1:03:45. He was more than four minutes ahead of German Vico Merklein (1:08:11), who just held off Geert Schipper of the Netherlands by one second. There was a German winner in the women’s event: Christiane Reppe finished in 1:10:07. Italy’s Francesca Porcellato (1:14:04) was second and German Jady Malavazzi took third (1:16:28).
