2005-09-23

Lee Bong-ju is determined to restore not only personal but Korean pride by winning the 32nd staging of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON on Sunday. The 1996 Olympic Games silver medallist is under no illusions the task facing him in the German capital against a horde of predominantly Kenyan runners, will be extremely tough. But the 34-year-old former Boston champion with 28 marathons under his belt, firmly believes after reshaping his training methods, he can come up trumps this weekend.

Lee Bong-ju has integrated more speed work into his preparations since the disappointment of placing 14th at last year's Games marathon in Athens. "I have worked more, concentrated and I feel confident," he said of his new regime which has seen him this summer set track personal bests for both 5000 and 1000 metres. Lee Bong-ju believes having this attribute in his armour his essential, given that former track stars such as Paul Tergat the world record holder, constantly put in powerful surges during the endurance race.

"I know that there are a lot of good Kenyans and I know that they are the favourites," said Lee Bong-ju, insisting he has corrected what was a major weakness. "But I will show that the Korean runners can still win and I will prove it here," added the Korean racing
